New Name: Art Pays

The Young Creatives Programme is being re-named. We have chosen the name Art Pays.

The concept of art paying is a positive one for artists and for consumers of the arts. Many people, artists especially, have an idea that in order to produce art you have to suffer in some way. ‘That you have to pay for your art.’ My idea is that art pats you. It pays you to make art and to have art.

People also believe that art is not a necessity and therefore it should be free. But every society needs the healing and building and social commentary that art provides. The positive impact of art cannot be underestimated, and that if we want to make art for society we need to make sure that art is treated as an investment. A personal, financial investment for a buyer, a social investment for a creator, or an investment in yourself as a creator.

Naming our collective Art Pays is a positive act. We are putting a positive concept out into the world and making ourselves and others think of art in a positive way.

A Name!

Shamila says we need a name, and I think she's right. (Do you?) So we need to vote, please tick the box in the right hand column for the name you want.

The options we came up with at the Brainstorm session are as follows:
  1. Art Wave: Waves help cleans dead or dirtiness out of the See and that keeps the nature beautiful as ever. Wave is something that is found on air, those kind of Wave help us to be connected through, using some electronic stuff. Ocean waves helps to the clean the ocean, it is a source of inspiration to many sporting activities and it is majestic to look upon – natural art. Electronic /sound waves enables us to communicate across the globe – connecting us to one another regardless of physical locality.
  2. Art Pays: The concept of art paying is a positive one for artists and for consumers of the arts. Naming our collective “Art Pays” would be a positive act. We would be putting a positive concept out into the world and making ourselves and others think of art in a positive way.
  3. Ziyabila: Encompasses the “melting pot” concept, always on boiling point with creative ideas. It also is often used informally in Xhosa and Zulu to express/represent all things “happening” or moving forward…
  4. Cape Young Creatives: Don't change the name, we like it the way it is!

Mary wants to know

Hey guys

Are you thinking about empowerment as it relates to youth? Because one of the most serious stumbling blocks for people in South Africa is the culture of entitlement, what does the group think about the relationship between empowerment and entitlement?

It looks like there are grand plans going on in Cape Town, man I can't wait to get back!

Let's make a racket!

Hello Cape Creatives!

I've been quiet since I left, but I am so looking forward to coming back in September and to all the cool stuff we'll do that I'd like to share some ideas.

I sent some links for the meeting last week, if you didn't have a chance to look, here is a clearer explanation of what my idea for the biennale is:

Let's make a racket! Let's disrupt the city, shake people out of their comfort zones with art that is participatory, challenging, and friendly!

The way that we get the youth involved is identify sites where lots of young people transit, and stage shows or create installations for the times that they will go past.

We can take our inspiration from artists like: Banksy

These pictures from www.artofthestate.co.uk

Guerilla gardeners:
This is a picture from the blog Laughing squid. The gardeners have taken a parking bay and turned it into a park. People still have to pay the normal parking tariff to use the space, but they get to sit on the grass under a tree!

Guerilla architects:
This is from the blog Aesthetic Grounds. Henk Hofstra somehow managed to pave a road blue as a memorial to the river below it.

Guerilla designers:

I can't insert a picture here, but the link is to a post-it campaign against violence. There are also beautiful design ideas on the site.

And of course, saving the best for last:
Guerilla theatre:

Some ideas for possible installations:

We find a space that is seriously ruined by litter and collect the litter, turning it into beautiful sculptures, right where we pick it up.

We make contact with graffiti artists to facilitate socially conscious, challenging murals (if anyone knows young people who could benefit from some training, this is a superb opportunity).

We stage performances of guerilla theatre in busy spots like Cape Town station.

So let me know what you think guys! And tell me what happened at the last session?

Please check my song out!
Its unpolished and looking for band mates....
The name of the song is sweetest surrender. I wrote it for a songwriting course that I did and I just love it.
Needs some work though!

my shot of the wild

This day was quite exciting for me as I got to see many animals. Animals I'd usually just see on television.

But today was the day to step into their teratory and keep my hand steady!

I know so much about using colours, texture and lines in photography...just never thought of using it this day. But anyway the mid day sun sitting for BIG L here was a shot in a lifetime for me.
